Personal Assistant Services (PAS)

What Is It?

Personal Assistant Services (PAS) includes assistance with an activity of daily living such as bathing, dressing, meal preparation, feeding, incidental household cleaning and laundry. It may also include shopping, banking, budgeting, recreation and leisure activities, using transportation, social interaction and assistance or coaching minor problem solving necessary to achieve increased independence, productivity and inclusion in the community. The assistant may also provide general supervision and protective oversight. All these services may be performed directly or to support the individual in learning how to perform them.

Who Provides These Services?

Personal assistance may be provided either by an individual contractor or by an employee of an agency. The determination of which type of provider will deliver the services will be the choice of the individual/ or family. This is limited by the fact that for an individual provider to be used, the client and/or family must be able and willing to supervise the provider. The planning team must certify that this supervision will be sufficient to safeguard the client's health and safety.
