College for Living Programs

What Are They?

College for Living Programs seek to improve the quality of life for persons with developmental disabilities by offering them opportunities to attend non credit classes in an inclusive higher education setting. Students may enroll in classes in the following areas:

  • Basic Skills
  • Life Enrichment
  • Practical Living
  • Physical Conditioning
  • Social and Interpersonal Skills
  • Arts
Who Provides These Services?

Adult Continuing Education for Persons with Developmental Disabilities (ACED): Individuals who are 16 years of age and older and are Jackson County residents are eligible to participate. ACED offers four 5-week sessions in the Fall and Spring. Classes meet on Saturday mornings in the Fall and Spring. Summer schedules vary depending on the course offering. Class sites are the UMKC Volker Campus in Kansas City and Longview Community College in Lee's Summit. The UMKC Institute for Human Development conducts the program. UMKC College of Arts and Sciences Continuing Education Division and the Longview Community College are collaborative partners. The Jackson County Board of Services (see Senate Bill 40 fact sheet) funds the ACED program.

College Experiences for Adults with Developmental Disabilities (CEADD): Individuals who are 19 years of age and are Clay or Platte County residents are eligible to participate. CEADD conducts two 8-week sessions in the Fall and Spring. The Summer schedule varies depending on course offerings. All classes meet at the Maple Woods Community College Campus. Maple Woods Community Education Department administers the program. The Developmental Disabilities Resource Board of Clay County and Platte County Board of Services (see Senate Bill 40 fact sheet) and the Clay/Platte ARC funds the CEADD program.

College Learning Experience Activities and Resources (CLEAR): CLEAR, sponsored by Johnson County (Kansas) Community College, provides non credit continuing education classes for adults with developmental disabilities or severe learning disabilities. All CLEAR classes are held on the Johnson County Community College campus each fall and spring semester. An abbreviated schedule is offered in the summer.
