Assistive Technology |
What Is It?
|
Assistive Technology is any item, piece of equipment or product system that is used to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities
of an individual with a disability. Simulated speech devices, specialized wheelchairs, multi function telephones, programmable microwave ovens,
modified computers, walkers, environmental controls are examples of assistive technology. An assistive technology service includes any service
which assists an individual in the selection, acquisition or use of an assistive device.

Who Provides These Services?

Missouri Assistive Technology Project was established in 1991 as part of the Technology Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act.
The mission of the Project is to increase access to assistive technology through system change and development of consumer responsiveness. It accomplishes
its mission through consumer information dissemination, information and referral services, training, policy change and advocacy for funding of assistive technology.
The Project also coordinates a statewide equipment exchange program called "Swap 'n Shop" for purchasing, donating or looking to buy assistive technology
devices, an Assistive Technology Loan Program (please refer to the service fact sheet on Family Financial Assistance Programs
that is part of this series) and an Adaptive Telephone Equipment Program. This program provides adaptive telephone equipment to persons with disabilities to make
and receive voice telephone calls. This program is not limited to any particular type of disability.

Capper Foundation, Center for Assistive Technology believes that the future of people with disabilities is linked to their ability to access technology.
Their mission is to provide easy access to services and information on assistive technology. The center has hundreds of low to high technology devices available for
"hands on" experiences, to encourage individuals to make informed choices about their specific needs. The center may also provide assistance for locating
funding sources and related services. Other programs coordinated by the Center are:
- Augmentative communication evaluation, consultations and training. Low technology to high technology communication recommendations for educational, vocational, medical and individual assistance.
- Adaptive computer assessments, consultations and training: Software and hardware recommendations for educational, vocational and personal use.
- Assistive technology assessments: Barriers removal assessments for work and home environments.
- Recycled Assistive Technology Program: Collects, refurbishes and distributes donated assistive technology devices to individuals for their residential, educational, or vocational settings.
- Workshops on augmentative communication, adapted computers, switch adaptations and general assistive technology devices.
- Toy adaptations and battery interrupters: Nominal fees required to permanently or temporarily adapt battery operated toys previously purchased by individuals.
